The Farr 52 (also known as the Farr 52 One Design or Farr 52 OD) is a high-performance racing sailboat designed specifically for competitive sailing. It was created in the late 1990s by the world-renowned designer Bruce Farr and his team at Farr Yacht Design.

The class was developed expressly for international big-boat racing, covering both offshore and inshore (coastal) regattas.

Design Concept

The primary goal of the Farr 52 was to create a true One Design class, where all yachts compete with identical parameters. This ensures that success depends mainly on crew skill, tactics, and sail trim, rather than equipment advantages.

Over time, several boats were optimized for IRC and ORC handicap systems, and many Farr 52s are still actively racing today in ORC and offshore regattas worldwide.

Performance

  • Excellent upwind performance with quick response to wind shifts

  • Exceptionally fast downwind, thanks to large gennakers and a wide hull form

  • Lightweight yet extremely strong carbon composite sandwich construction

  • Rod rigging, carbon mast, and carbon boom

Racing history

  • The Farr 52 has competed in numerous prestigious international events, including:

    • Admiral’s Cup

    • Rolex Middle Sea Race

    • Copa del Rey

    • ORC World and European Championships

Many yachts have later undergone IRC/ORC-focused refits, resulting in several custom Farr 52 variants (e.g. Team Vision Future, Red, etc.).

Typical Equipment

  • Carbon mast and boom

  • Hydraulic backstay adjuster

  • Dual-wheel steering

  • Rod rigging, high-end sail inventories (3Di / Kevlar / Carbon)

  • Minimalist, race-oriented interior: weight-optimized, often without sleeping cabins or with only minimal comfort

Overall Impression

The Farr 52 remains one of the most iconic Grand Prix-class yachts in the 50-foot range. The design is fast yet manageable, delivering one of the best all-round performances in the 15-meter category of its era—and it continues to be highly respected on racecourses worldwide.
